Prices can crash off the back of a tweet.

Speaking of crashes, there are issues outside of market control that can impact the price of cryptocurrencies. This is something to keep in mind if you’re considering making an investment.

Back in 2021, Elon Musk took to the social media platform Twitter – which he’s recently bought – to declare that he no longer liked Bitcoin. That tweet came in the form of a meme, with a couple of emojis and the hashtag #Bitcoin.

As a result, Bitcoin’s price dropped by 4.3%. That impact then rippled through the market. Dogecoin dipped by 1.7% too.

Before this incident, Musk had caused the price of Bitcoin to fall when he announced Tesla would stop accepting Bitcoin payments due to the crypto’s damaging environmental impact (as discussed above with crypto mining). The value of Bitcoin fell by hundreds of billions in just one day and Musk was labeled irresponsible.
